Marion and St. Mary’s

River Arch (near St. Mary’s and Marion).

View from Poulin’s Drive.

Beer Store (Marion Street).

Until recently, I had not realized how unfriendly the St. Mary’s and Marion intersection is. It’s not reflected in these photos, but the intersection (can it even be called an intersection? I’m not sure.) is terrible—almost Portage and Main terrible. You can cross the street, but it’s a real pain, and you invariably have to walk quite a bit out of your way.

A classic Winnipeg example of car first and everything else last.

A brief walk through the eastern tip of the River-Osborne area. The notable photo here is the first one—161 Mayfair Avenue—which was demolished shortly after the photo was taken. Simple me, I naively assumed the fencing around the stately old houses was indicative of a forthcoming restorative effort. Nope.

Here are the first few photos from the third and final Manitoba road trip I did in the summer/fall of 2015. The day got off to a great start with a beautiful, misty sunrise as I headed towards La Salle, through the RM of MacDonald.

In other news, today marks exactly eight years of Winnipeg Love Hate; it was started on February 29—leap year—2008. Thanks for your continued support over the years!

A bit all over the place today. First, a couple of shots from a lovey winter day at The Forks; Boyd Autobody (Pembina Highway); and a couple of previously unseen shots—Nutty Club (Westbrook Street) and Towne Cinema (Notre Dame Avenue).

Winnipeg Sunset

winnipeg-sunset-2

winnipeg-sunset-1winnipeg-sunset-3winnipeg-sunset-4winnipeg-sunset-5

Some sunset shots from back in mid-September. It had been a while since I’d been out shooting at night—not much time these days after the birth of my baby girl in July—but this was one of those nights I knew I had to get out and shoot. I think I actually missed the real color show by around five minutes, but I still managed to get some nice results.

On a side note, I’m going to try to resist this spot for a while, as it is now officially the most clichéd photo spot in the city. It’s understandable, of course; the bridge, the museum, the skyline, the river, the sunset. Pretty spectacular.

View from Wellington Crescent

I’ve posted photos of this view a few times over the years now, but why not? It’s one of my favorite views of the city. If you squint your eyes a bit, this could almost pass for Vancouver. Okay, Vancouver in the early 70s, but still Vancouver.

Progress/Prosperity

14211921326_f41ced7ce0_b14235058445_39a6f22111_b14242216835_2a7d70c503_h14048410868_7a8e9ae017_b14235065275_5946ef591e_b

I’m going to come right out and say it. I don’t get the Progress/Prosperity sign in St. Vital (St. Mary’s Road). At all. Is it some sort of cruel joke? The sign—seemingly influenced by the iconic Santa Monica pier signage——is centered over a stairway that literally leads to nowhere. Take a walk down the stairs, if you dare, and you’ll find yourself standing in weeds up your waist. If you’re lucky, you’ll be able to move a few feet before the brush will become to thick to move any further.

So what’s the story here? This little strip of St. Mary’s—which feature Marigold Restaurant, Gondola Pizza and a pretty fantastic view—is pretty great. But this unfinished park…or boardwalk…or footpath…or whatever it is… is kind of embarrassing.

Update: Christian Cassidy of West End Dumplings has provided some insight. Turns out the arch is a replica of an old welcome arch that greeted people (and streetcars) into St. Vital, c. 1913. I’m shocked! I had no idea there was an historical basis at all for this thing.
