Shiny Downtown Streets

Notre Dame and Ellice13234997083_cc72e4ee44_b13210998245_effba78eb9_b13211003565_31680948bd_b13234978513_9ecf31e66d_b13211142493_9e52c0ea6b_b13211339704_67d4e2a0e5_b

Ever notice how the streets are always wet in the movies—even when there isn’t a cloud in the sky? Wet streets are beautiful, especially when the sun is shining, and when these conditions arise, I do everything I can to get out and shoot. The Spring melt is often such an occasion.

From the top: Looking towards Portage and Main from Garry and Notre Dame; looking west down Bannatyne across Main Street; looking south down Main from Bannatyne; the Canadian Wheat Board (Main Street, originally constructed 1929 with additions done in the 60s)’ an alley near McDermot and Princess; and a look towards Red River College down Adelaide Street.

I somehow missed posting these interior photos of the gorgeous RRC Paterson Global Foods Institute (Main Street, renovations completed 2013), aka Jane’s Restaurant. These photos were taken back in February, 2013.

Adelaide, Between William and Elgin

Some of the notable structures on or around Adelaide, William and Elgin near Red River College. From the top: The old Genser’s Building (Elgin); Metro Motors and Red River College (on the right); Canadian Footwear and Foon Hai (William); 336 William; 312 William; and finally, a side-shot of 336 William.

By Old Market Square

King Street/Princess Street. Quite a variety of structures surround Old Market Square. Among them, to the north is the much hated (and likely not long for this world) Public Safety Building. To the east, the magnificent Union Bank Building (built 1904) along side the recent Patterson Global Foods Addition (2013). And to the west, the utilitarian Maw’s Garage on Princess Street (1907).

A shmorg of photos from the Exhchange District as night falls (with a couple of shots from the Central Park neighborhood, technically speaking). From the top: The newish WRHA building on Hargrave Street; Western Paint, one of my favorite neon signs in the city (Hargrave); Red River College (Princess Street, completed 2004); Massey Building (Williams Avenue, built 1885); Paterson GlobalFoods Institute (Main Street, built 2011); a trio of Princess Avenue shots; looking south down Hargrave; and finally, the backside of 385 Carlton.

William and King. Okay, now this is exciting. I honestly didn’t expect to see another piece of architecture on this spot (former location of The Leland Hotel) in my lifetime. One of the great eyesores of Downtown Winnipeg has officially been conquered. Bravo (once again), Red River College. Expected completion, 2012.

Red River College

Red River College

Princess Street (redevelopment completed 2004). Red River College emerged as the heroes of Downtown revitalization back in 2004, when their ambitious Princess Street Campus was completed. I attended classes here for two years, and being on campus every day for that period of time was a pure joy.

As gorgeous as the campus is, it’s mind boggling that RRC is currently in the process of topping themselves; when the construction and redevelopment of the Union Bank Building is completed, RRC will have virtually brought about a renaissance in Downtown Winnipeg.
