Here are a few photos of Sargent Avenue from late October. The top photo—End of Season—may very well be the saddest photo I’ve ever posted on Winnipeg Love Hate.

Notre Dame is an interesting street. It’s one of the main arteries in and out of Downtown, and has stretches that are very urban and walkable. Still, it’s never been a street that you’d particularly want to walk down. Too many breaks from the urban fabric—in the form of surface parking lots—kill the momentum. But still, every time I’m on Notre Dame I always see loads of potential.

City Council sees potential to, but through 1980s-colored glasses. Despite the recommendation of city planners, council has approved a decidedly anti-urban proposal by Independent Jewelers that will seriously alter the corner of Notre Dame and Isabel.

And don’t forget about the Manitoba Hydro/Calvary Temple/Luke’s Machinery clusterfuck that deadened another section of the street (Notre Dame and Adelaide). And this one was in the Exchange District no less!

So as always, the city planners get ignored by council and the city reverts to the lowest common denominator. Despite what Jeff Browaty or Russ Wyatt think, this is not progress.

A few today from Sargent Avenue. These were taken on a warm,  wet and sloppy day in the second week in March. Despite the mess, these early Spring days are some of my favorites as a Winnipegger.

*Note to the person that splashed (ie, completely drenched me): I will find you.

A look at Wellington Avenue—a dense, yet narrow street in the West End—a rarity in Winnipeg.

More from Ellice Avenue, roughly from Sherbrook to Burnell. From the top: Nery’s Beauty Salon, Hong Hing Restaurant, Discount Everything, Pho Kim Tuong Restaurant, Ellice Buy & Sell (no grouchy staff guaranteed), and the block of buildings east of Burnell.

A bit of a dog’s breakfast today—shots from all over the city. First it’s the Balmoral Hotel at Balmoral and Cumberland; next, the Nairn Overpass; then it’s BGBX Condos on Wall Street—one of the homeliest modern buildings in Winnipeg; and finally it’s Julianna Pizza on Ellice Avenue. These photos have absolutely nothing in common other than their chronological proximity on my Flickr timeline.

Sargent Avenue. Definitely one of my favorite murals in the city.

A trio of old West End gems. First, Wild Strawberry on Sargent Avenue. Next, the Minto Armoury (St. MAtthews Avenue, built 1914). And last, a photo I’ve title Boarded Up on Burnell. Both of these photos are re-worked versions of photos from 2009.

A collection of shot taken during one of the earlier snowstorms of the winter. As all early snowstorms do, this one slowed the traffic down to a crawl, so I used the opportunity to shoot some photos out the car window. The usual commute is around 15 minutes, but this one was well over an hour. From the top: The Balmoral Hotel (Balmoral Street, built 1966), Airport Parking (Wellington Avenue), Maxie’s (Sargent Avenue), Parts Source (Isabel Street), and a Co-op Gas Bar/Convenience Store (Ellice Avenue).

Notre Dame Avenue. You really have to admire a yellow building.

A wet and miserable day in Winnipeg. That’s George’s Burgers at Selkirk and Salter, and the Legion on Sargent Avenue.

A cold, snowy, all together miserable day around Winnipeg. From the top: Graham and Garry; the Cash Store on Notre Dame Avenue, Salisbury House on Notre Dame, and a parking lot between Hargrave and Adelaide.
