Here’s a new look at Central Park—one of the most colorful, dynamic and photogenic neighborhoods in the city. Many impressive structures in this area, highlighted by the Breadalbane Block (aka, Ambassador Apartments), the almost equally impressive 344 Cumberland, and the recently contentious Centre Village.

Sunset from two different parts of the city. Abbi’s Payfair (Sargent Avenue) in the Central Park area, and The Grove (Stafford Avenue) in Crescentwood.

West End Classics

A couple of classics from the West End. First, the iconic former Perth’s building—now Juliana Pizza (Ellice Avenue), followed by Teddy’s Place on Balmoral Street (technically in the Central Park portion of Downtown, but close enough).

Notre Dame Avenue

A look at Notre Dame Avenue—an eclectic street that has some really interesting stretches, not to mention one of the best views of the skyline (the top two photos were taken from around Balmoral Street). Meanwhile, the street is dotted with small business such as Tawagin Pawn Shop. Finally, some of Winnipeg’s best buildings are clustered on Note Dame near Portage Avenue, such as the gorgeous Lindsay Building.

The Canada Building (Donald Street, build 1910) and the nearby Ryan Block (King Street, built 1895).

More From Central Park

More from the Central Park area. From the top: Calvary Temple (Hargrave Street, built 1894, new structure 1985); the Hargrave Building (Hargrave Street, built 1922); a look at Carlton and Cumberland; and Harlequin (Hargrave Street). I know not what this last place is.

In and around Central Park. From the top: Waddell Fountain (built 1914), where no swimming is allowed; 411 Cumberland; and a couple of apartments buildings on Carlton.

Around Central Park

Some of the more interesting buildings in downtown Winnipeg can be found in the Central Park neighborhood. From the top, the under-appreciated Nokomis Building (Cumberland Avenue), home to Merkato Ethiopian Restaurant. Next door is the much more well-known Breadalbane Building (Hargrave and Cumberland, built 1909). And finally, the less elegant but whimsical 411 Cumberland (the whimsical parts aren’t shown in this admittedly bleak portrait).

A collection of impressive buildings in the Central Park Neighborhood. Top two photos are Teddy’s Place on the corner of Balmoral and Sargent, followed by 575 Balmoral Street, the corner of Qu’appelle and Decan, the NRC CNRC building on Ellice (I have no idea what this is), and finally, 367-375 Kennedy Street

Canada Building

8746284362_ef8e71aebc_b

Donald Street (built 1910). A somewhat under-appreciated building in Downtown Winnipeg. Its large windows hint towards the modernist buildings that would become the norm some 30 or 40 years later.

A shmorg of photos from the Exhchange District as night falls (with a couple of shots from the Central Park neighborhood, technically speaking). From the top: The newish WRHA building on Hargrave Street; Western Paint, one of my favorite neon signs in the city (Hargrave); Red River College (Princess Street, completed 2004); Massey Building (Williams Avenue, built 1885); Paterson GlobalFoods Institute (Main Street, built 2011); a trio of Princess Avenue shots; looking south down Hargrave; and finally, the backside of 385 Carlton.

Some previously unedited shots of the gorgeous Central Park view from 2008. I had previously posted slightly different versions of these, but I’m pretty sure these ones hadn’t been touched until now.
