Portage Avenue (1987).
Okay, I know this is a picture that’s been taken a thousand times, but none by me–so I thought I’d give it a try.
The rest of the mall may be a wee bit sketchy (especially now that McNally is gone), but I’ve always thought this main space was a pretty great (albeit underutilized) space. In fact, I’d say that in general, the mall is over-criticized. Perhaps I can say this due to the fact that I have literally no memory of Portage Avenue before the mall was built (strange because as a kid, I spent many Saturday afternoons downtown). If I had clear memories about all the destruction that preceded the mall, I might not be so forgiving of Portage Place.
