Centennial Concert Hall

Centennial Concert Hall

Main Street (1967). Taken on its own, I’m pretty neutral about this building, but I can’t say I’m neutral about the clear-cutting mentality that yielded it, as well as many of its neighboring buildings (The Manitoba Museum, Planetarium and Manitoba Theatre Centre).

At least the city has the blind optimism of Modernism to blame in this case (and others from the period). But it’s a shame it didn’t learn its lesson and continued to pursue such projects years later (Portage Place), and even to this day (WRHA on Main and the proposed stadium in Point Douglas).
